The towing more in detail

The exclusive towing service in the Greater Montréal region primarily exists to assure your safety and that of all highway users. It also offers the advantage of improving traffic flow. This is why the Ministère des Transports du Québec (MTQ) has established this service, which is an essential link in the Greater Montréal highway traffic management system.

What is exclusive towing ?
This service means that towing a vehicle stopped on a clearly established road network (see map on the back of this leaflet) can only be done by one of the towing companies contractually retained by the MTQ. The quality and efficiency of the service are thus improved. Over 45,000 users resort to the exclusive towing service each year.

Rights and obligations the user

On the highway network covered by the exclusive towing service, you must use the services of the towing company retained by exclusive contract.

You are not obligated to do business with a garage recommended by the tow truck driver. It's your decision where your vehicle will be towed. However, depending on circumstances it might take longer to intervene for a long distance towing in order to assure the availability of tow trucks in the exclusive territory. In this case, you will be driven without additional charges to the towing company's base of operations until a tow truck becomes available.

The basic rate includes towing of your vehicle within a 10 km radius. It also allows you to have it towed to the towing company's base of operations and have access to a free parking space for six hours. If you wish, you may then call the towing company of your choice.

Rights and obligations the towing company
The towing company undertakes to provide you with rapid, safe, courteous, quality service, in accordance with the standards established by the MTQ.

It also undertakes to provide you with a bill, in accordance with the MTQ's requirements, that adheres to the rate chart presented in this page. (Rate subject has change without notice on this page)

How can we find you ?

When an incident occurs on one of the traffic lanes covered by the exclusive towing service, it is reported to the Traffic Management Service Centre of the MTQ in one of the following ways:

  • by means of one of the many surveillance cameras installed on the highway network;
  • by one of the MTQ's highway patrollers;
  • by a highway user.
  • by a Sûreté du Québec officer;

The Ministère des Transports employee sends immediately to the location appropriate help to protect and assist you.

To report an incident

Modes of payment

You can pay the tow truck driver with your credit card or by any other mode of payment accepted by the towing company. Don't forget to keep a copy of your bill.

What if you're a member of an automobile club, or have private towing insurance or insurance obtained with the purchase of your vehicle ? You can be reimbursed for all or part of the cost, depending on the general policy of your association or your insurer. The mode of billing and the exclusive towing rates are well known to these associations and companies.
